Air Force Set for Mountain West Outdoor Championships

Championship season begins for the Air Force track and field team this week, as the squad travels to Clovis, Calif., for the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Championships. The three-day meet gets underway on Thursday, May 11, and continues through Saturday, May 13, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
MEET INFORMATION
The 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held May 11-13 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High School in Clovis, California (1560 N. Minnewawa Ave). Competition begins for the Falcons at 9:30 a.m. (PT) on Thursday – a complete schedule of events can be found on Page 2 of the release. For fans unable to attend, the meet will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network and MW app, while real-time results will be available through Record Timing and updates will be posted to Air Force's social media sites (@af_tfxc) throughout the week.

The Mountain West Outdoor Championships will feature 11 women's teams (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, No. 23 New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming) and the men's teams from Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, New Mexico, San Jose State, Utah State and Wyoming.
HISTORY 101
The men have captured six of the last 10 team titles at the outdoor championships (2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022). Individually, the Falcons have been at the top of the MW Outdoor award podium 97 times – highlighted by a program-best eight conference titles at the 2015 meet. Jamiel Trimble is the Falcons' most decorated MW Outdoor champion, with five individual titles and as a member of three winning 4x100-meter relays. Highlighted by a program-best 27 top-three finishes in 2017, the Falcons have accounted for 323 all-conference selections. Air Force currently holds seven of the conference's Championship Meet Records, including the men's 200-meter dash (Trimble, 20.33 in 2017), men's 1500-meter run (Sam Gilman, 3:40.44 in 2021), women's 5000-meter run (Mahala Norris, 15:39.13 in 2021), men's 3000-meter steeplechase (Bryce Lentz, 8:40.45 in 2022), women's 3000-meter steeplechase (Norris, 9:44.10 in 2021), men's pole vault (Cale Simmons, 18'1¾" in 2012) and women's javelin throw (Dana Pounds, 195'8" in 2006).
AROUND THE CONFERENCE
Eight individuals – Javin Bostic (men's 100-meter dash, 10.34), Sam Gilman (5000-meter run, 13:30.36), Ryan Johnson (10,000-meter run, 28:20.70), Cameron Harris (110-meter hurdles, 13.63a), Darek Hackett (400-meter hurdles, 51.64), Jalan Rivers (high jump, 7'1½"), Caiden Macktinger (pole vault, 17'0¾") and Hayden Bullock (discus throw, 194'9") – concluded the regular season with conference-leading marks in their respective events, while the Falcons hold 28 top-five marks in the conference standings.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE
In addition to the Falcons competing in Clovis, nearly a dozen of the men's middle distance and distance runners will travel to Azusa for the APU Last Chance Meet at Cougar Stadium. The 800-meter and 5000-meter events will take place on Friday, May 12, while the 1500-meter run and 3000-meter steeplechase will be held on Saturday, May 13. Three record-setting Air Force seniors are listed among the nation's Top 20 in the May 8 edition of the TFRRS National Standings. Sam Gilman is tied for 11th in the 5000-meter run after clocking a season-debut of 13:30.36 at the Payton Jordan Invitational, while Ryan Johnson is ranked 17th following his 28:20.70 performance in the 10,000-meter run at the Stanford Invitational and Hayden Bullock is listed 20th in the discus after recording a throw of 194'9" at the Beach Invitational. Sophomore Jalan Rivers joined the Falcons' Top 20 lineup, following a career-best high jump clearance of 7'1½" at the Drake Relays (No. 13).

With a combined time of 54:49.9, the men's 5000-meter quartet of Sam Gilman, Eli Bennett, Sean Maison and Ethan Marshall is ranked sixth in the May 8 edition of the USTFCCCA #EventSquad Rankings – which are determined by the cumulative season-best marks from a team's top-four athletes on the national descending order list. The men's hammer squad of Jaret Prete, Cooper Stroka, Gerrit Tamminga and Texas Tanner moved back into the Top 10 with a combined distance of 245.92 meters, while the men's 10,000-meter (1:57:29) and discus (213.04m) squads are listed in the Top 15.

Cameron Harris (track), Jaret Prete (field) and Max Sannes (freshman) completed the men's sweep, while Katie Thompson (field) and Chloe Kinlaw (freshman) claimed weekly honors on the women's side.

Following a week of finals at the Academy, the Falcons return to action on May 24-27, when select athletes head back to California for the opening round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The four-day West Prelim, held at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, will feature the top 48 athletes in each event. The list of national qualifiers will be announced following the conference championships.
