USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Backed by another record-setting performance from sophomore Texas Tanner, the Air Force men's weight throw had a stellar evening (Jan. 19) in the throwing circle at the Cadet Field House, as the track and field team opened competition at the Ralph Lindeman Classic.
Tanner unleashed a weight throw heave of 68'10" (20.98m) to improve on the Academy Record that he set one week ago in Boulder. The throw, which came on his second attempt of the night, propelled the sophomore to a runner-up finish in the 15-thrower event and headlined an Air Force outing that included three of the top-five finishes and two additional improvements to the program's Top 12.
Senior Gerrit Tamminga improved his overall distance in the weight throw for the third-straight meet – recording a personal-best heave of 66'8" (20.32m) on his third attempt to finish third in the meet and move into No. 3 on the program's all-time standings, while junior Cooper Stroka became the 14th thrower in program history to surpass the 60-foot mark in that event, tallying a fifth-place distance of 60'2½" (18.35m) to equal the 12th-best throw in program history.
Junior Jalan Rivers won his second-straight high jump title with a season-best leap of 6'10¾", while members of the women's pole vault and long jump combined for five improvements to the program's all-time standings. Sophomore Chloe Kinlaw cleared the 12-foot bar for the first time as a collegiate with a clearance of 12'1½" (No. 17 all-time), while the freshman duo of Emma Opalacz and Karli Neff registered personal-best marks to move into No. 23 (11'9¾") and No. 25 (11'5¾"), respectively, on the Academy list. On the long jump runway, Katie Thompson broke her own Senior Class Record with a distance of 18'11¼", while freshman Anna Lindsley recorded a mark of 17'4¼" to debut at No. 22 in the Academy Record Book.
Several preliminary races were also contested today, with Air Force accounting for 17 qualifying times.
The men earned multiple qualifying marks in all four contested events, including half of the final eight in the 60-meter hurdles. Junior Darek Hackett improved his No. 10 standing in the Air Force Record Book to win the qualifying round with a time of 7.94, while seniors Philip Hundl (8.16), Seth Meador (8.19) and Brian Hubbard (8.28) all advanced on time.
Hackett was one of two men to impact the Academy Top 10 during qualifying, as sophomore Jettason Rose recorded the ninth-fastest 200-meter time in Air Force history (21.42) to win that prelim and lead junior Javin Bostic (21.55) and freshman Jace Martin (21.94) into the final. Fellow freshman James Warmbrod IV won the opening round of the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.75, while classmates Zachary King (49.89) and Keegan Bennett (50.49) also qualified to the final. Bostic and Rose also accounted for qualifying performances in the 60-meter dash, as Bostic clocked a 6.79 to earn an automatic spot into the finals and Rose advanced on time with a 6.88 finish.
On the women's side, junior Taylor Rioux advanced to the finals of the 60-meter (7.90) and 400-meter (56.17) events, where she will be joined by freshmen Brooke Coleman (60-meter dash, 7.85), Kori Leverenz (400-meter dash, 58.03) and Allison Fernstrom (400-meter dash, 60.34).
One Cadet Field House Record fell to the wayside on Friday night, as Aikaterini Stefanidi – the gold medalist of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games – recorded a facility record of 15'2¼" in the pole vault.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow morning for the final day of action at the Ralph Lindeman Classic. Action will begin with the women's shot put at 11:00 a.m. (MT).
