SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – AIC scored two goals early in the third period and held on for a 4-2 win over Air Force, Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, Mass.
AIC (1-4-1, 1-1-0 AHA) took the early lead as Brett Bamber found Danny Weight on the back door for a 1-0 lead at 4:03 of the first period.
Late in the second period, Air Force (4-4-0, 1-1-0 AHA) tied the game on the first career goal for freshman Nick Sajevic. Sam Jacobs took a shot that was saved and Sajevic cleaned up the rebound with 53 seconds left in the period. Jacobs picked up his first career point with an assist and freshman Sam Stitz collected his second assist of the season.
AIC scored two goals in a span of 83 seconds early in the third period for a 3-1 lead. On a delayed penalty, John Lundy skated down the right wing and snapped a wrister for a 2-1 lead at 1:42. Just 1:23 later, Noah Serdachny redirected a shot by Brett Rylance for a 3-1 lead at 3:05. The Falcons cut the lead to 3-2 on the rush late in the third period. Brendan Gibbons found Chris Hedden at the far blue line with speed. Hedden snapped a wrister from the high slot with 4:31 left for his fourth goal of the season. Owen Dubois also assisted on the play. With 41 seconds left, Timofei Khokhlachev sealed the game with an empty-netter.
Air Force outshot AIC, 28-27, in the game. The Falcons were 0-for-1 on the power play while AIC did not have a power play of its own. Guy Blessing made 23 saves for the Falcons. Chase Clark had 26 for the Yellow Jackets.
"They are a good team and they came out with some desperation," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They can really get up and down the ice and they will win a lot of games this season. We just cannot constantly play from behind. This group has the resiliency and the gumption to come from behind, but we have given up the first goal in all eight games this season. That is not a recipe for success. The way we are playing right now, if we start playing with a lead, we are going to be a really tough team to play against."
Air Force returns home for a pair of games against No. 9 Colorado College with the Pikes Peak Trophy on the line. The Falcons and Tigers meet at Robson Arena on Friday, Nov. 1, and at the Cadet Ice Arena, Saturday, Nov. 2.
