Texas Tanner Shatters Air Force Hammer Throw Record
3/22/2024 9:43:00 PM | Track and Field
PUEBLO, Colo. – Air Force sophomore Texas Tanner kicked off the outdoor portion of the season in record-setting fashion on Friday, March 22, as he dismantled the Academy's hammer throw standard during a winning performance at the Spank Blasing Invitational in Pueblo.
Leading the Falcons to an easy 1-2-3 finish in the 29-man hammer throw, Tanner unleashed a distance of 219'3" (66.83m) to win the event, add more than 25 feet to his previous best from last year, and improve the Academy Record that Jaret Prete set last year by nearly seven feet. It is the third program standard for Tanner in 2024, as he also reset the Academy records in the shot put and weight throw during the indoor season.
Tanner was one of two Falcons to surpass the 200-foot barrier in the hammer throw on Friday – a tally that brings the total number of Falcons that can make that claim to six, as senior Gerrit Tamminga recorded a career-best heave of 203'11" (62.15m) to finish second in the meet and move into fourth on the all-time standings. Junior Cooper Stroka – another member of the Falcons' 200-Foot Club from his throw of 202'3" last spring – completed the Academy sweep with a third-place throw of 195'7" (59.62m).
The women also impacted the Academy's hammer throw standings, as senior Alexxis Brown moved into No. 15 with a distance of 156'10" (47.81m) and freshman Paige Birch debuted at No. 23 following a career-opening throw of 142'6" (43.43m).
Brown also claimed a runner-up finish in the javelin throw, as she recorded a distance of 133'0" (40.54m) during her first trip down the javelin runway in two years to take second in the 22-runner event. The men added a pair of top-five finishes in that event, as senior Teagun Glenn and freshman Jonah Meyer finished third (185'10", 56.66m) and fourth (182'6", 55.65m), respectively.
Since just three events took place at the ThunderBowl today, the rest of the squad heads to Pueblo tomorrow (March 23) for a full day of competition at the Spank Blasing Invitational.
