Darek Hackett Heads to NCAA Outdoor Championships

The collegiate track and field season comes to a close this week, when junior Darek Hackett travels to Eugene, Ore., to represent Air Force at the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
MEET INFORMATION
The four-day NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, will run from June 5-8. The men will compete on Wednesday, June 5, and Friday, June 7, while the women will compete on Thursday and Saturday. The national semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles will take place at 6:30 p.m. (PT) on Wednesday, while the championship race will be held at 7:27 p.m. (PT) on Friday. The men's running events will be broadcast on ESPN2, while live stats will be available via Flash Results.
HOW HE GOT THERE
Darek Hackett advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after claiming an automatic bid at the West Preliminary on May 22-25. Hackett finished second (50.95) in his heat of the West final to earn the automatic spot to Eugene.
LONG TIME COMING…
Darek Hackett is Air Force's first intermediate hurdler to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since Tom Clark at the 2003 national meet.

A total of 30 Falcons have combined for 43 All-America awards at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while the women have accounted for 24 additional accolades (11 individuals, three relays) at the NCAA Division II level (1981-96). Jim Murphy (5000-meter run: 1964), Dana Pounds (javelin throw: 2005, 2006) and Mahala Norris (3000-meter steeplechase: 2021) are the Falcons' three DI national champions, while Pounds, Nick Frawley and Sara Neubauer lead the program's DI Record Book with three Outdoor All-America awards each.

Headlined by a Top 10 ranking from Texas Tanner (No. 9 in the hammer throw, 237'5"), three Falcons are listed among the NCAA's Top 25 in the final TFRRS rankings of the 2024 season. Tanner holds a second top-25 placement in the discus throw (194'8", 22nd), while Darek Hackett is ranked No. 17 in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.03 and Luke Combs is listed 25th in the 10,000-meter run following a 28:24.84 finish.
#SQUADGOALS
The men's hammer throw finished the regular season ranked in the nation's Top 5 of the USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings – a list which is determined by the cumulative season-best marks from a team's top-four athletes in the national descending order list. Texas Tanner, Gerrit Tamminga, Cooper Stroka and Massimo Grisotto recorded a combined distance of 249.75 meters – the best distance outside of a Power 5 squad. The men were also ranked among the nation's top-15 in the discus throw (12th) and both hurdle events (13th, 110-meter hurdles; 13th, 400-meter hurdles).
HACKETT PUNCHES TICKET TO EUGENE
05-24-24 | Darek Hackett secured his place on the starting line at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after earning an automatic bid in the West final of the 400-meter hurdles on May 24. With a time of 50.95, Hackett finished second in his heat to guarantee a spot in the national semifinal. Hackett, who also accounted for a second-place finish (50.61) in the opening round, is the first 400-meter hurdler in 21 years to qualify to the final two rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
