CLOVIS, Calif. – Backed by top-three finishes from freshman Brayden Richards and senior Jason Renze, the Air Force track and field team continued competition at the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Outdoor Championships this evening (May 16) in Clovis. The Falcons combined for five scoring finishes at the conference meet, while sending five more athletes into the finals of their respective events.
Richards claimed the silver medal in the decathlon after finishing the two-day event with 7446 points. Richards, who opened the day in third, maintained that placement throughout the 110-meter hurdles (14.92, 859 points) and discus throw (career-best 40.23 meters), before moving into second with an outdoor-best, 863-point clearance of 4.85 meters in the pole vault. Richards was the only contender to surpass 59 meters in the javelin, as he finished first in the event with a 754-point distance of 61.07 meters – a throw that would've finished fifth in the open javelin. Following a 503-point time of 5:10.13 in the 1500-meter run, Richards concluded the two-day, 10-event competition with 7446 points and marked the fifth-straight year that Air Force has earned a podium finish in the decathlon.
Competing around an injury, Renze made his second-straight trip to the podium in the 3000-meter steeplechase, as he finished third behind a time of 8:49.49. With that finish, Renze became the first Falcon in 25 years to claim a top-three steeplechase finish in back-to-back years
Freshman Junior Allen also scored for the Falcons in the steeplechase on Friday, recording the 12th-fastest time in program history (8:58.06) to finish eighth in his first conference championship. From the field, Air Force collected points from junior Texas Tanner and senior Jalan Rivers. Tanner recorded a distance of 18.02 meters (59'1½") to finish fourth in the shot put, while Rivers cleared 1.98 meters (6'6") to tie for sixth in the high jump.
Sophomore Kayla Beach and freshman Sarah Reynolds wrapped up two days of heptathlon action in 10th (4601 points) and 11th (4596 points), respectively. With that total, Reynolds moved up to fourth on the program's all-time heptathlon standings and added 38 points to a Freshman Class Record that had stood since 1998. The first-year Falcon also moved up to 18th on the Academy's long jump list following a meet-opening the day with a distance of 5.35 meters (17'6¾").
The Falcons claimed five more spots in the finals on Friday, advancing athletes out of the qualifying rounds in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and 1500-meter run. Senior Javin Bostic and freshman Asher Jenkins both auto-advanced into the championship of the 100-meter dash, as they won their respective prelim heats behind times of 10.35 and 10.49, respectively. Jenkins' time equaled his career-best, which is the ninth-fastest time in program history and an Air Force Freshman Class Record. The Falcons advanced runners in both finals of the 1500-meter run, as senior Ally Peterson claimed an auto-advancing finish in the women's race (4:28.80) and junior Ethan Ashley advanced on time in the men's race (3:51.09). Senior Taylor Rioux rounded out Falcons' list of finalists, as she posted a 55.43 finish to advance on time in the 400-meter dash.
After two days of action, the men are currently second (53.50 points) and the women are 11th (9).
The Falcons close out the 2025 Mountain West Outdoor Championships tomorrow (May 17) at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Action is slated to begin for the Falcons at 3:15 pm (MT) and all events will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network and the MW App.
