LOGAN, Utah – Air Force Women's Tennis wrapped up its final weekend on Mountain West competition with a 4-2 win at Utah State on Sunday.
Air Force opened the day with a one-two win in doubles. Senior Arianna Van Houweling and Shivaani Selvan defeated Magdal Nunez Pureco/Sabina Pintea, 6-2, improving to 10-5 as a pair in dual doubles and 7-2 against Mountain West pairings. On line two, senior Abby Cotuna and Sofia Mavor clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory against USU duo Terezia Mlkva/Kylee Sperry. With its fourth-straight doubles point secured, Air Force has now claimed a doubles win as a team in 12 of its last 13 contests and is now 8-1 against Mountain West opponents.
Van Houweling was first to claim victory in singles and a 2-0 Air Force advantage in the match behind a 6-2, 6-1 win over Utah State's Sabina Pintea. The Falcon's captain has scored three straight wins and improved to 11-2 in dual singles.
Following Van Houweling's win, Utah State worked its way onto the scoreboard with a pair of wins on lines four (Chahd Tourkhani def. Mavor, 7-5, 6-3) and five (Magdal Nunez Pureco def. Nadia Kojonroj, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1).
On line one, Cotuna pulled the Falcons within striking range of a clinch, scoring her sixth dual singles win of the season over Mlkva (6-3, 3-6, 7-5). From there, courts three and six remained with Air Force freshmen Yule Kang and Maya Michalski to secure a Falcon win. It was Kang who lifted Air Force to a 4-2 final, battling through back-to-back tiebreakers to defeat Aggie Maria Ramos Garcia, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2). Rhoades, facing sophomore Kylee Sperry, took a 6-4 first set and led 4-1 in the second when Air Force took a clinch.
Head coach Taylor Hollander on the Falcons' win:
"It was another hard-fought battle, and I couldn't be more proud of this group. Their toughness, heart, and resilience showed through, especially in the way they responded after a close, difficult loss. You can see them getting stronger with every match. This group of eight has the belief and ability to accomplish anything they set their minds to."
