LAST WEEK: The 10th-ranked Air Force Falcons opened the Western Athletic Conference slate with a commanding victory over UMKC (1-6-0. 0-1 WAC), 4-1, on their first Saturday evening matchup of the season. The win marked Air Force's eighth-straight and Doug Hill's 100th-career win since taking the reins in 2007.
HILL HITS THE CENTURY MARK: Falcon head coach Doug Hill recorded his 100th career victory on Sept. 22 as his Falcons earned a 4-1 win at Kansas City to open WAC play. Hill has spent 24 years coaching at the Academy while spending 12 of those years at the helm of the program. The 1983 USAFA graduate has hit a hot streak over the past two seasons, guiding the Falcons to two-straight 14-win seasons, a mark that is one win shy of the tying the program record of 15 single-season wins. Hill's overall record as a head coach is 100-97-23 (.507), while holding a 47-46-14 (.505) mark in conference matches. He has the second-most wins in program history.
ON THE MAP: Air Force is officially a consensus top-10 team among the three polls released by press time. The Falcons moved up two spots to eighth in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 and are ninth in the College Soccer News Top 30 and 10th in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25. The ranking is the fourth-highest held in program history. In 1996, the Falcons were No. 6 on Oct. 21, No. 4 on Oct. 28, and then held their highest ranking ever at No. 3, on Nov. 4.
The United Soccer Coaches switched up the regional ranking system for 2018 and the WAC is now in the Far West Region with the Pac-12 and Big West conferences. Air Force continues to sit atop the rankings for the second straight week. UT Rio Grande Valley also appears in the Far West Regional rankings at 10th.
The WAC has three teams in the top 50 of the first NCAA RPI release. Air Force is the top team at 24 with UT Rio Grande Valley at 32 and Seattle U at 38. Houston Baptist is just outside the top 50 at 51.
THE FALCONS AT A GLANCE: Seven seniors, a pair of juniors and a pair of sophomores make up the Falcons' starting 11, led by team captains Tucker Bone, Austin Dewing and Zane Moxley. Air Force is holding the top spot in the conference in points (68), goals (24), assists (20), least goals allowed (6), goals against average (0.65) and shutouts (4). The Falcons have tallied four times as many goals as opponents faced (24-6). Air Force has outshot seven opponents in nine games, totaling 139 shots to 80 by opponents faced. When attacking the frame, Air Force more than doubles opponents' shots on goal numbers, taking 62 to opponents' 28.
Individually, Bone leads the squad 14 points and 21 shots. Dewing is the Falcons' frontrunner in goals with six this season. Bone and freshman JT D'Emidio have four assists apiece for the most on the team. Bone and Dewing are the Falcons' senior-most veterans with Bone making 55 career starts in 68 games played while Dewing has played in 65 career matches with 36 starts.
The Air Force defense is firing on all cylinders, posting four shutouts in the eight-game winning streak including a 3-0 routing of nationally-ranked Colgate. The Falcons' defense has held the last three opponents to single-digit shot counts, holding Harvard to only two shots in the entire match. In net, AF's Andrea Seazzu holds the best goals against average (0.67) and also leads the league in shutouts (4). He is 8-1 this season with a .786 save percentage. With the assistance of the Falcons' superior defensive line, Seazzu has eight shutouts in 14 career appearances for a 13-1 career record in the Air Force cage.
