U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – A big third period led eighth-ranked Notre Dame to a 6-1 win over Air Force in a non-conference college hockey game, Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, N.D.
Notre Dame (2-0-0) turned an Air Force turnover into a goal three minutes into the game as Cam Morrison scored with a wrister from the right circle. Air Force tied the game late in the first period on Max Harper's first career goal. Zach Mirageas knocked down a puck to keep it in the zone and his point shot was redirected by Harper. Trevor Stone also assisted on the play.
Early in the second period, Notre Dame took a 2-1 lead on the power play. The Irish won the ensuing faceoff and moved the puck quickly between the points. Tony Dello set up Matt Hellickson at the right circle for a slap shot at 2:54.
The Irish scored three goals in the first seven minutes of the third period to take control of the game. Colin Theisen scored on the power play 35 seconds in to the third period for a 3-1 lead. Cal Burke scored on a shot from the slot at 4:20 and Theisen scored on a rebound at 6:57 for a 5-1 lead. Â . Jake Pivonko scored with one second left to make up the final margin.
Notre Dame outshot Air Force, 32-23, in the game. The Falcons were 0-for-2 on the power play while the Irish were 2-for-3. Zach LaRocque started in goal for the Falcons and made 20 saves in 47 minutes. Sophomore Alex Schilling saw his first collegiate action as he played the final 13 minutes and made six saves. Ryan Bischel made 22 for ND
"We dodged a bullet in the first period and then we got some momentum when we scored late," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We weathered the storm in the first. They got the one goal in the second but we were only down 2-1 entering the third. If we win a period, we have a chance to win the game. Then they get the power-play goal early in the third and the game kind of got away from us. Notre Dame will be a Frozen Four contender. There is a reason they are No. 8 in the nation."
Air Force (0-2-0) returns home for a two-game non-conference series against Arizona State, Oct. 18-19, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
