LONG BEACH, Calif. -- A small contingent of Air Force field event athletes opened competition at the Beach Invitational today (April 12) in Long Beach, with the throwers combing for three top-10 finishes and senior Kasarah Hernandez moving up the program's all-time standings in the pole vault.
Sophomore Texas Tanner unleashed a throw of 71.91 meters (235'11") to finish second in the Gold section of the hammer throw – and second in the full 58-athlete field. Junior Cooper Stroka won his section – and finished ninth overall – with a distance of 63.73 meters (209'1"), while senior Gerrit Tamminga claimed a top-20 placement (18th) after posting a mark of 61.43 meters (201'6").
Junior Joe Nizich rounded out the Falcons' list of top-10 finishers, as he recorded a season-best distance of 67.15 meters (220'3") – a mark just 0.08 meters off his PR and the fifth-best mark in program history – to finish ninth out of 43 throwers in the javelin.
In addition, the opening flights of the pole vault were held today, with Hernandez posting an outdoor-best clearance of 3.61 meters (11'10") to move up to No. 17 on the program's all-time standings and freshman Tanner Woodring nearly matching his personal best with a 4.71-meter (15'5½") clearance. Final placements for both will be determined following tomorrow's sections.
The Falcons return to Jack Rose Track tomorrow (April 13) for a full day of action at the Beach Invitational.
