LONG BEACH, Calif. – A stellar day in the throwing cage from junior Texas Tanner and sophomore Paige Birch headlined the Air Force track and field team's afternoon at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday (April 17) in Long Beach.
Tanner improved his own Mountain West, Service Academy, and Air Force Record in the hammer throw for the second time this season after unleashing a throw of 74.11 meters (243'1") on his second attempt. With that throw, Tanner bettered the rest of the 30-thrower event by nearly five meters and led Air Force to two of the top-four finishes, as senior Cooper Stroka placed fourth with a throw of 64.22 meters (210'8"). Tanner returned to the circle in the afternoon for his second victory of the day and his best discus performance in a collegiate setting. Unleashing a throw of 62.45 meters (204'10") on his third attempt, Tanner bettered the field by four meters – and held a six-meter advantage over the next collegian.
The women's hammer throw also received a major update on Thursday, as Birch accounted for the second-best distance in Air Force history – and the best since 2010. Initially claiming that distinction on her opening throw (56.37m, 184'11"), Birch improved that distance to 56.44 meters (185'2") on her next attempt – also resetting her own Sophomore Class Record for the second time in as many throws.
Air Force added three more top-10 finishes from the infield of Jack Rose Track on Thursday. Sophomore Jonah Mayer recorded a distance of 58.07 meters (190'6") to finish eighth out of 22 throwers in the javelin, while freshman Morgan Glaser cleared 1.67 meters (5'5¾") to finish ninth out of 31 athletes in the women's high jump and senior Jalan Rivers made his return to the men's high jump with a 10th-place clearance of 1.97 meters (6'5 ½").
On the track, sophomore Carly Foster won her section of the 1500-meter run in 4:43.57, while senior Javin Bostic, freshman Asher Jenkins, junior Jettason Rose, and sophomore Jace Martin combined for a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay (40.54). Bostic and Jenkins also collected top 20 times in a 100-meter field of over 80 runners, as the pair finished 13th (10.52) and 17th (10.59), respectively. Senior Taylor Rioux, who led Air Force to a seventh-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay (47.30, with sophomore Brooke Coleman, freshman Ella Pears, freshman Ryan McFadden), clocked a 200-meter time of 24.40 to finish 16th out of 72 runners.
The Falcons return to Jack Rose Track tomorrow (April 18) to begin action at the Beach Invitational.
