WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross' Noah Eyre scored at 2:08 of overtime as the Crusaders defeated Air Force, 3-2, in an Atlantic Hockey America game Friday, Jan. 16, at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
Early in the first period, Holy Cross (11-8-2, 9-2-2 AHA) lit the lamp. Ty Gagno set up Anthony Carone for his first career goal at 5:55.
Air Force (10-11-2, 6-8-1 AHA) scored two goals in a span of 86 seconds to take a 2-1 lead in the second period. Nick Sajevic put the Falcons on the board from his linemates Will Dawson and Sam Stitz at 12:46. The Falcons took their first lead on the rush as Ren Morque puck back a rebound of Holt Oliphant's shot at 14:12. Mason McCormick also assisted on the play. Holy Cross then had 63 seconds of the 5-on-3, but the Falcons killed the two-man advantage. However, on the ensuing 5-on-4, Holy Cross tied game when Michael Abgrall put back a rebound at 17:02.
After a scoreless third period, the game headed into overtime with each team getting a point in the standings. At 2:08 of overtime, Holy Cross capitalized on an Air Force turnover as Eyre scored to give the Crusaders the extra point in the standings.
Each team had 23 shots on goal in the game. Holy Cross was 1-for-4 on the power play and killed all five of Air Force's advantages. Danick Laroux had 21 saves for the Crusaders while Dominik Wasik had 20 for the Falcons.
"This was a crazy, chaotic and emotional game," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It was a pretty evenly played game. Then we had a bad turnover there in overtime. It was a hard fought, physical game and when it was all said and done, they made the play that won the game for them. Now we have to get ready for tomorrow and I expect a similar type of game."
The Falcons and Crusaders conclude the two-game league series, Saturday, Jan. 17, in Worcester, Mass.
