Falcons Shatter Two Air Force Records at Stanford Invitational
3/31/2023 11:59:00 PM | Track and Field
STANFORD, Calif. – Two Air Force records were toppled in stellar fashion today (March 31), as the track and field team took on some of the nation's elite at the Stanford Invitational in California. Senior Ryan Johnson and sophomore Javin Bostic spanned the record book rewrites, as the pair crushed the Academy Records in the longest and shortest events of the outdoor season.
AIR FORCE RECORDS
Javin Bostic, 100-Meter Dash (10.34)
Ryan Johnson, 10,000-Meter Run (28:20.70)
Johnson closed out a full day of competition at Cobb Track and Angell Field by shattering the program's 10,000-meter record – and accounting for the fastest 10K ever by any service academy runner. Finishing within the top half (11th) of a 30-man field that included some of the nation's top distance runners, Johnson completed the 25-lap race in 28:20.70. That time – a three-minute improvement over his event debut last spring – deleted 13 seconds from the program standard (and Air Force Senior Class Record) that Sean Houseworth had held since 2009. Johnson, a 2022 All-American in cross country, also knocked seven seconds off the Service Academy Record that had stood since 1997 during his record-setting outing.
While the Stanford Invitational is known for its fast times in the distance events, Bostic blazed his way to the top of the Air Force Record Book in the shortest race of the outdoor season – twice. The sophomore kicked off his record-setting day with a 10.41 finish in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash – a heat-winning time that took 0.02 seconds off the program standard Zach Johnson had held since 2016, improved the Sophomore Class Record that Jamiel Trimble (2016) and Travis Picou (2006) had shared by 0.05 seconds, and equaled the eight-year-old all-academy record.
Just over one hour later, Bostic crushed all of those records, as he raced to a 10.34 finish in the final.
AIR FORCE TOP-10 MARKS
No. 3 – Rachel Crytser, 3000-Meter Steeplechase (10:25.22)
No. 4 – Cameron Harris, 110-Meter Hurdles (14.00)
No. 4 – Eli Bennett, 5000-Meter Run (13:42.70)
No. 6 – Sean Maison, 5000-Meter Run (13:46.78)
No. 9 – Ally Peterson, 5000-Meter Run (16:31.65)
No. 9 – Ethan Marshall, 5000-Meter Run (13:50.13)
The men's 5000-meter standings received a major rewrite during Stanford's night session, as junior Eli Bennett, classmate Sean Maison and senior Ethan Marshall recorded three of the nine-fastest times in Academy history. Bennett used a strong kick near the final turn to win his section of the event with a career-best time of 13:42.70 – a 12-second PR and the fourth-fastest time in program history, while Maison deleted more than 13 seconds off his previous best to finish sixth in the same section and move into sixth on the all-time standings. Marshall rounded out the rewrite, as he moved into No. 9 on the Academy standings with a runner-up time of 13:50.13 – a personal improvement of more than 12 seconds.
The women's 5000-meter standings also received an update on Friday, as sophomore Ally Peterson posted a time of 16:31.65 to delete two seconds from her own No. 9 time on the program's all-time list.
Junior Rachel Crytser had a huge season debut in the steeplechase, as she knocked nearly a half-minute off her previous time to leap into No. 3 on the Academy's all-time standings (10:25.22), while senior Cameron Harris continued to climb up the Top 10 list for Air Force's 110-meter hurdles. Harris, who finished third in the finals with a 14.07, easily won his preliminary heat with a career-best 14-flat finish – a time that tied Luke Marker (2004) for No. 4 on the program's all-time list.
In his first 5000-meter race of the 2022-23 campaign, senior Scott Maison placed third in his section with a time of 14:00.56 – a mark just 0.42 seconds off his career best. Sophomore Darek Hackett posted a season-debut of 52.51 to finish fifth out of 26 runners in the 400-meter hurdles, while senior Aidan Boyle earned a top-10 finish in his first steeplechase of the year (8:59.74, 10th).
From the field, sophomore Joe Nizich won the Invitational section of the javelin throw after launching a season-best distance of 213'0" to better the field by nearly four feet, while junior Gerrit Tamminga earned a runner-up finish in the open section of that event following a throw of 172'11". The javelin was one of two second-place finishes for Tamminga on Friday, who also earned runner-up honors in the hammer throw (183'11") and paced the Falcons to a pair of top-six finishes in the 22-thrower event (freshman Texas Tanner, sixth at 164'1").
Tamminga, the first Falcon to step on Angell Field this morning, capped his day nearly 12 hours later with a career-best distance of 167'9" in the discus throw. Adding eight inches to his personal-best distance, the junior finished third in the open section and took over No. 18 outright on the program's all-time standings.
Sophomore Jalan Rivers recorded a top-five clearance in the high jump (fifth, season-best 6'9¾"), while senior Hayden Bullock placed sixth in the Invitational section of the discus throw (175'8") and junior Brandon Lindner finished eighth in the Invitational flight of the long jump (22'10¾").
Air Force returns to Cobb Track and Angell Field tomorrow (April 1) for the final day of the Stanford Invitational. It is one of two meets for the Falcons in the Bay Area, as several Air Force runners will also compete at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in San Francisco.
