Headlined by a Top 10 ranking from Texas Tanner (No. 9 in the hammer throw, 237'5"), three Falcons are listed among the NCAA's top 25 in the latest TFRRS rankings (April 29). Tanner holds a second top-20 placement in the discus throw (194'8", 20th), while Darek Hackett is ranked No. 15 in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.26 and Luke Combs is listed 25th in the 10,000-meter run following a 28:24.84 finish.
#SQUADGOALS
Two event groups are ranked among the nation's Top 10 in the April 30 edition of the USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings – a list which is determined by the cumulative season-best marks from a team's top-four athletes in the national descending order list. The men's hammer squad lineup of Texas Tanner, Gerrit Tamminga, Cooper Stroka and Massimo Grisotto area ranked No. 6 with a combined distance of 247 meters, while the men's 4x400-meter hurdles quartet of Darek Hackett, Cameron Breier, Ryan Hajek and Ben Sklodowski are listed 10th with a combined time of 3:32.15.
WARMBROD EARNS WEEKLY MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS
04-30-24 | Following a career-best performance in the 400-meter dash at the Drake Relays, James Warmbrod IV was named the Mountain West Men's Freshman of the Week – the second such award of his career. The first-year Falcon collected a top-five finish in his premiere event after clocking in at 47.38 – the fastest time by a MW Freshman and the fifth-fastest overall mark in the league.
WAVING THE WHITE FLAG
04-27-24 | The Falcons captured a program-record four championship flags at the historic Drake Relays on April 25-27 – including the Academy's first-ever titles in the 100-meter dash (Javin Bostic), 5000-meter run (Luke Combs) and 400-meter hurdles (Darek Hackett). Hackett added a second Drake title to his weekend haul, as he teamed up with Seth Meador, Braeden Holcombe, and Philip Hundl for the program's first shuttle hurdles relay title since 1976 – and fourth overall (1963, 1975, 1976).
PARTY LIKE IT'S 1984
04-27-24 | With Ava Gilliana on the anchors, two 40-year-old Air Force women's relay records fell to the wayside at the Drake Relays on April 26-27. Gilliana, Liliane Aittama, Rachel Fereday and Camryn Bodine clocked an Academy Record time of 8:54.51 in the 4x800-meter relay on April 26 – a mark that knocked 12 seconds off a standard that Joy Meyen, Arcolar Harrison, Laurell Mazik and Gail Conway had held since 1984. Gilliana and Aittama teamed up again on April 27, as the pair – along with Taylor Rioux and Kori Leverenz – combined for a record-setting 3:41.09 performance in the 4x400-meter relay. With the time, the quartet took 0.24 seconds off the Air Force and Service Academy Records that Harrison, Conway, Sharon Rucker, and Barbara Fogel had maintained since 1984.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
04-27-24 | While Texas Tanner surpassed the 230-foot mark in the hammer throw for the sixth time this season (235'3") at the Drake Relay, Gerrit Tamminga and Cooper Stroka made some moves in the Academy Record Book. Tamminga unleased a career-best throw of 215'8" to move into No. 2 on the program's all-time standings, while Cooper Stroka improved his own No. 4 all-time distance with a personal-best heave of 210'1".
JUST TEXAS BEING TEXAS
04-26-24 | With a monster PR of 194'8" in the discus throw, Texas Tanner shot to No. 2 on the Academy's all-time standings at the Drake Relays on April 26. Tanner, who improved his career distance by nearly 13 feet during the meet, is now just one inch off Hayden Bullock's program standard.
COMING UP
Championship season begins for Air Force next week (May 9-11), as the Falcons head to Clovis, Calif., for the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
