Two Falcons Claim Wins at Colorado's Field Day

BOULDER, Colo. – Sophomores Braeden Holcombe and Caiden Macktinger collected first-place finishes this afternoon (Jan. 14), as Air Force kicked off the 2022 portion of its season with Field Day at the Potts Indoor Invitational. The Falcons, who competed in nine field events at Colorado's Indoor Practice Facility, combined for 16 top-five finishes against their Front Range counterparts.
FIRST-PLACE FINISHES
Men's Pole Vault: Caiden Macktinger, 16'4¾"
Men's Long Jump: Braeden Holcombe, 22'7"
Holcombe added nearly a foot to his distance in the long jump, as he recorded a career-best leap of 22'7" on his final attempt to win the 11-jumper event by more than five inches. Holcombe, who improved his overall distance twice during the six-jump competition, paced the Falcons to a 1-2 finish in that event, as classmate John Colizzi posted a mark of 22'3½" to finish second.
Macktinger captured his second pole vault title in as many meets this season, as he tallied a season-best clearance of 16'4¾" to win the nine-vaulter event and lead Air Force to a sweep of the top-three finishes. Senior Ethan Gardner made his season debut with a runner-up clearance of 15'9", while freshman Robert Postell recorded a career-best height of 15'11" to place third.
The men also accounted for three of the top-five finishes in the high jump and shot put.
Freshman Jalan Rivers recorded a career-best clearance of 6'7" to place second out of 15 athletes in the high jump, while classmate Collin Schulz matched that height to tie for third and sophomore Philip Hundl cleared 6'5" to place fifth. From the throwing circle, senior newcomer Will Broadus launched a throw of 51'5¾" to take third in his shot put debut, while sophomore Gerrit Tamminga posted a career-long 51'2¾" to finish fourth and junior Hayden Bullock added a distance of 50'9¼" to take fifth.
Tamminga's career day continued into the weight throw, as he posted a personal-best distance of 52'1¼" to finish fifth and claim his second top-five mark of the day. The sophomore was one of two top-five finishers for the Falcons in that event, as junior Jaret Prete registered a season-best throw of 56'2" to take fourth.
Senior Frankie Porambo cleared 11'5¾" in her season debut to tie for second in the pole vault and lead Air Force to a trio of top-five placements on the women's side of the travel roster. Junior Aaliyah Ricketts registered a distance of 34'4¾" to take third in the triple jump, while senior Ari Martinez cleared a season-high 5'7¼" to finish fourth in the high jump.
With the field event portion of the Potts Invitational now complete, the focus turns to the track. Twenty-two Air Force runners will head to Colorado's Indoor Practice Facility tomorrow (Jan. 15) for the second day of competition at the 2022 opener. Action is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. (MT).
